In the late days of September and the early days of October, we celebrate the feast days of a number of very notable saints: St. Padre Pio, Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, St. Jerome, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the Guardian Angels, and St. Francis of Assisi.
We can take this opportunity to remember and call to mind the great truth of the communion of saints. As Christians, we hold tight to the truth that the material world we experience with our five senses is not all that exists. We believe in the immaterial, or spiritual, world as well.
When someone dies, they do not disappear or evaporate. The faithful departed still exist and are very much alive. We believe that every human person is an immortal soul who will never cease to exist, from the time of their conception through all eternity. Those who have journeyed from this life to the next are still a part of our lives, our families, and the Church.
In a certain sense, those who are already in heaven are more alive than we are at this very moment. These are the saints!
The saints love us and care for us because they are perfectly united with the Holy Trinity. The saints stand not only as examples for us to imitate, but also implore God to give particular graces for our benefit.
When you are going through a difficult time or facing a seemingly unresolvable challenge, turn to one or two of the saints and ask for their heavenly assistance. They would be the first to tell you that they have no power of their own, but that all the good they do is through the power of God. The saints are real people. They have personalities. They have concerns and interests. They want to be our friends and our patrons, our protectors.
Some of you may already have made friends with some of the saints. Perhaps some of you have never felt that you have. Today, I encourage each of us to learn about the life of a saint and to begin to befriend them by asking for their heavenly assistance.
The saints are alive. They care for us, and they pray on our behalf. We have the communion of saints behind us. We are not alone.

Santos: nuestros amigos y patronos, nuestros protectores
No estamos solos.
