"Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin." Hebrews 4:14-15 

Holy Orders is the Sacrament through which men receive from God the grace to perform the sacred duties Christ entrusted to His Church. The Twelve Apostles were the first priests and bishops of the Church. Through the ages men have been ordained as bishops and priests by the laying on of hands to continue the mission of Christ and His Church.

In the early Church, the order of Deacon was created to assist the priest in the mission and service to the Christian community. (Acts 6:2-6) Today, deacons help the priest at the celebration of Mass, the baptism of children, the witnessing of marriage, and the celebration of funerals. They are ordained to serve and care for the needs of the Church's faithful as well as the poor, the sick, and marginalized of the world. The permanent diaconate is often comprised of married men. Through a call from God and affirmed by the local bishop these men assist in parishes.

In the Latin Rite, a man who becomes a priest must be unmarried. He is to promise a life of chastity and obedience to the Church and his local bishop. His call comes from God and is affirmed through his Bishop. By the laying on of hands the man becomes a priest who acts in the Person of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, anointing of the sick, the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and all the other Sacraments.

El Orden Sagrado es el Sacramento a través del cual los hombres reciben de Dios la gracia para realizar los deberes sagrados que Cristo confió a Su Iglesia. Los Doce Apóstoles fueron los primeros sacerdotes y obispos de la Iglesia. A través de los siglos, los hombres han sido ordenados obispos y sacerdotes por la imposición de manos para continuar la misión de Cristo y Su Iglesia.

En la Iglesia primitiva, la orden del diácono se creó para ayudar al sacerdote en la misión y el servicio a la comunidad cristiana. (Hechos 6: 2-6) Hoy, los diáconos ayudan al sacerdote en la celebración de la Misa, el bautismo de los niños, el testimonio del matrimonio y la celebración de los funerales. Están ordenados para servir y cuidar las necesidades de los fieles de la Iglesia, así como de los pobres, los enfermos y los marginados del mundo. El diaconado permanente suele estar compuesto por hombres casados. A través de un llamado de Dios y afirmado por el obispo local, estos hombres ayudan en las parroquias.

En el rito latino, un hombre que se convierte en sacerdote debe ser soltero. Debe prometer una vida de castidad y obediencia a la Iglesia y a su obispo local. Su llamado viene de Dios y se afirma a través de su Obispo. Por la imposición de manos, el hombre se convierte en sacerdote que actúa en la Persona de Jesucristo para el perdón de los pecados, la unción de los enfermos, la celebración de la Sagrada Eucaristía y todos los demás sacramentos.
