That “upstairs room already prepared” tells us that God always precedes us. Even before we realize we need to be welcomed, the Lord has already prepared a space for us where we can recognize ourselves and feel we are his friends. This place is, fundamentally, our heart: a “room” that may seem empty, but which awaits only to be recognized, filled and cherished. The Passover, which the disciples must prepare, is in reality already present in Jesus’ heart. He has already thought of everything, arranged everything, decided everything. However, he asks his friends to do their part. This teaches us something essential for our spiritual life: grace does not eliminate our freedom, but rather awakens it. God’s gift does not eliminate our responsibility, but makes it fruitful.

Reflexión del Papa León XIV: Dios siempre nos hace espacio

Esa “habitación del piso de arriba ya preparada” nos dice que Dios siempre nos precede. Incluso antes de que nos demos cuenta de que necesitamos ser acogidos, el Señor ya nos ha preparado un espacio donde podemos reconocernos y sentirnos sus amigos. Este lugar es, fundamentalmente, nuestro corazón: una “habitación” que puede parecer vacía, pero que solo espera ser reconocida, llena y apreciada. La Pascua, que los discípulos deben preparar, en realidad ya está presente en el corazón de Jesús. Él ya lo ha pensado todo, lo ha dispuesto todo, lo ha decidido todo. Sin embargo, pide a sus amigos que hagan su parte. Esto nos enseña algo esencial para nuestra vida espiritual: la gracia no elimina nuestra libertad, sino que la despierta. El don de Dios no elimina nuestra responsabilidad, sino que la hace fecunda.

At the celebration of the Holy Mass, when we come to the altar to receive Holy Communion, we enter a sacred moment.  It is important to properly prepare our minds and hearts to receive Jesus’s body and blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist.  Approach the altar in prayer.  The procession to the altar is a time to say to Jesus, Come Lord and Save My Soul.  When we approach the Minister of Communion, here are a few things to remember:  Please make a bow toward the Eucharist in the minister’s hands, unless you choose to kneel to receive communion.  When the minister says, ‘The Body of Christ’, we should respond ‘Amen’.  Then we can choose to receive on the hand or on the tongue.  If you choose the hand, please make a throne by placing your dominant hand underneath the other and allow the host to be placed on your palm.  Then with your dominant hand, take the sacred host and place it in your mouth.  If you receive on the hand, please place the host in your mouth immediately.  Do not walk away with the sacred host in your hand!  If you receive on the tongue, after saying Amen, approach the minister close enough so they do not have to move forward.  Open your mouth wide and stick your tongue out.  The minister should be able to place the sacred host easily on your tongue.  Do not bite down on the host with your teeth or lips.  If you choose to receive from the chalice, the procedure is the same; bow, when the minister says ‘the blood of Christ’, say amen and then receive a small portion from the chalice.  After Communion, please return to your pew for private prayer, communal prayer and/or the singing of the communion chant/hymn.  This is a time to receive the divine love and consolation of Jesus. 

Cómo recibir la Sagrada Comunión

En la celebración de la Santa Misa, al acercarnos al altar para recibir la Sagrada Comunión, entramos en un momento sagrado. Es importante preparar adecuadamente nuestra mente y corazón para recibir el Cuerpo, la Sangre, el Alma y la Divinidad de Jesús en la Eucaristía. Acérquese al altar en oración. La procesión al altar es un momento para decirle a Jesús: «Ven, Señor, salva mi alma». Al acercarnos al ministro de la Comunión, recuerde lo siguiente: Por favor, incline la cabeza hacia la Eucaristía en las manos del ministro, a menos que prefiera arrodillarse para recibir la comunión. “As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.”

In our Catholic faith we teach that at the end of her earthly life, the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul.  Her faith and fiat bring the grace and gift of eternal life. Mary is our eternal model of how to respond perfectly to the will of God.  In heaven, she prays that we will all respond well, each day, to the will of God.  I pray also, as your pastor, that we will say yes to the love of Jesus through the love of Mary.  Her prayers help us to follow Jesus.

This Friday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into heaven.  This is a Holy Day of obligation.  I encourage you to make a commitment to attending all Holy Days of Obligation during the year.  Begin with this Friday.

En nuestra fe católica enseñamos que, al final de su vida terrenal, la Santísima Virgen María fue asunta al cielo en cuerpo y alma. Su fe y su fíat nos traen la gracia y el don de la vida eterna. María es nuestro modelo eterno de cómo responder perfectamente a la voluntad de Dios. En el cielo, ella reza para que todos respondamos bien, cada día, a la voluntad de Dios. También rezo, como su párroco, para que digamos sí al amor de Jesús a través del amor de María. Sus oraciones nos ayudan a seguir a Jesús.

Este viernes celebramos la Solemnidad de la Asunción de María al cielo. Es un día de precepto. Los animo a comprometerse a asistir a todos los días de precepto del año. Comience este viernes.

The O.C.I.A. program is our parish initiative to help individuals who may want to convert to the Catholic Church.  Starting September 4th, we will begin this journey of faith with those who have inquired and want to begin the process.  I want to challenge you today to invite someone to come to O.C.I.A. this year.  The power of invitation, accompaniment and prayerful support is a great method of evangelization.  O.C.I.A. is a time of learning, faith formation, liturgical prayer, community life and discernment that helps each inquirer to make the choice, with the help of God, to be received into the Catholic Church.  The time is now to invite someone you know to begin O.C.I.A.  Jesus, we trust in you.

 El programa O.C.I.A. es nuestra iniciativa parroquial para ayudar a quienes desean convertirse a la Iglesia Católica. The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) will begin in one month, September 4th.  I am calling upon all parishioners to courageously invite someone you know to consider coming to OCIA.  This is for non-Catholics who are interested in learning about joining the Catholic Church.  Invite them, come with them and encourage them to pray about receiving the Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist.  Invite them and encourage them to encounter the Love of Jesus.  Information is on our website, social media or you can call the parish office.  Be Invitational and help someone to find their way to the Catholic faith.  God bless you all,

Let's take a moment to thank seminarian Andrew Nguyen for all he has done for us these past 6 weeks. Andrew will finish his summer with his family and return to the seminary in August.  Let's pray for Andrew and his ongoing formation and preparation for the Priesthood.

Also, I want to thank all the parishioners who donated funds to our Youth so they could attend the Steubenville Youth Conference. Your contributions and support help our children to encounter Jesus Christ and grow close to His Church.  God bless you all!

On June 29, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul to honor the two great apostles Peter and Paul. St. Peter, one of the Twelve and the chief of the Apostles, the Rock upon which Christ built His Church, and St. Paul “called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God” (Romans 1:1) and Apostle to the Gentiles. Together they are honored as founders of the Church of Rome, having been separately martyred there during the reign of Emperor Nero.“Christian tradition has always considered Sts. Peter and Saint Paul to be inseparable: indeed, together, they represent the whole Gospel of Christ.” (Pope Benedict XVI)

Also known as the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, this feast honors Jesus Christ, Really, Truly, and Substantially Present under the appearances of bread and wine. This Presence happens through the change which the Church calls transubstantiation (“change of substance”) when at the Consecration of the Mass, the priest says the words which Christ Himself pronounced over bread and wine, “This is My Body,” “This is the chalice of My Blood,” “Do this in remembrance of Me.”

Join us after the 10:30 and 1pm masses for our annual Corpus Christi Procession.  Come and adore Christ the Lord with us in the Most Holy Eucharist.

This Sunday we say thank you to Fr. Lawrence and offer our prayers and love as he moves to his new Parish assignment.  Fr. Lawrence, thank you for your care for the people of St. Joseph parish these past years.

Our late Holy Father, Pope Francis, gave this interesting thought when preaching and teaching about God as a Trinity of Persons.  He said, “Today we can ask ourselves if our life reflects the God we believe in: do I, who profess faith in God the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, truly believe that in order to live I need others, I need to give myself to others, I need to serve others? Do I affirm this in words or with my life?”  On this great Solemnity, we reflect on the nature of how God reveals himself to us, but also, we reflect on how God, in the persons of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, calls us to a deep faith.  Our God loves us so much that in the fullness of time He reveals His true self.  God reveals Himself as a family of persons.  Within the family of God, and within His Church, we are sent out to love, to serve and to give our lives to others through love.  God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit sends us on a mission of faith in Him and love of others.  It is a Trinitarian Mission of Salvation for the world.  Let’s ask God today to make us good Missionaries of His divine love.

We welcome this week the Totus Tuus Missionaries and pray for all our children who will be participating.  We welcome children from all three Roman Catholic Parishes in Norman and pray that God will help them to grow in faith, love, hope and the knowledge of God’s divine mercy.  Mass this week will be at 11:30am each day in the main church.  All are invited.

Solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad

 Nuestro difunto Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, planteó esta interesante reflexión al predicar y enseñar sobre Dios como Trinidad de Personas. Dijo: «Hoy podemos preguntarnos si nuestra vida refleja al Dios en el que creemos: ¿Yo, que profeso la fe en Dios Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, creo realmente que para vivir necesito de los demás, necesito entregarme a los demás, necesito servir a los demás? ¿Lo afirmo con palabras o con mi vida?». En esta gran solemnidad, reflexionamos sobre la naturaleza de cómo Dios se nos revela, pero también sobre cómo Dios, en las personas del Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo, nos llama a una fe profunda. Nuestro Dios nos ama tanto que, en la plenitud de los tiempos, nos revela su verdadero ser. Dios se revela como una familia de personas. Dentro de la familia de Dios y dentro de su Iglesia, somos enviados a amar, servir y entregar nuestra vida a los demás por amor. Dios Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo nos envía en una misión de fe en Él y de amor al prójimo. Es una Misión Trinitaria de Salvación para el mundo. Pidamos hoy a Dios que nos haga buenos Misioneros de su divino amor.

Damos la bienvenida esta semana a los Misioneros Totus Tuus y oramos por todos nuestros niños que participarán. Recibimos a los niños de las tres parroquias católicas romanas de Norman y oramos para que Dios los ayude a crecer en la fe, el amor, la esperanza y el conocimiento de la divina misericordia de Dios. This Sunday we finish the Easter Season with the Great Solemnity of Pentecost.  Today, the Holy Spirit comes to rest upon the Apostles and inflames their hearts, minds and spirits with the Love of God. 

Today we celebrate the birth of the Catholic Church. The Apostles are sent out into the world to bring the Church, The Holy Spirit, The Sacraments, The revelation of Jesus Christ, the Divine Mercy of Jesus and the Saving Gospel to all the world. 

We too are called to proclaim the Saving Gospel to all the world.  We are followers of the Lord and sent on Mission!  With the Holy Spirit, bring the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to all souls.  Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful!

 Domingo de Pentecostés: Ven Espíritu Santo!

Este domingo culminamos el Tiempo de Pascua con la Gran Solemnidad de Pentecostés. Hoy, el Espíritu Santo desciende sobre los Apóstoles e inflama sus corazones, mentes y espíritus con el amor de Dios.

Hoy celebramos el nacimiento de la Iglesia Católica. Los Apóstoles son enviados al mundo para llevar la Iglesia, el Espíritu Santo, los Sacramentos, la revelación de Jesucristo, la Divina Misericordia de Jesús y el Evangelio de la Salvación a todo el mundo.

Nosotros también estamos llamados a proclamar el Evangelio de la Salvación a todo el mundo. ¡Somos seguidores del Señor y enviados en misión! Con el Espíritu Santo, lleva la Palabra de Dios y su poder a todas las almas. ¡Ven, Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles!

The month of June is traditionally dedicated to devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Here is a little information on the history and importance of our devotion to Jesus and His Sacred Heart.

In 1677 St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a nun of the Visitation convent of Parlay-le-Monial, France, described how Christ appeared to her in a vision: “I could plainly see his heart, pierced and bleeding, yet there were flames, too, coming from it and a crown of thorns around it. He told me to behold his heart which so loved humanity. Then He seemed to take my very heart from me and place it there in his heart. In return he gave me back part of his flaming heart.”

St. Margaret Mary experienced four revelations, during which Christ made the now-familiar Twelve Promises as well as the request to establish a feast in honor of his Sacred Heart. In 1765, seventy-five years after Margaret Mary’s death, the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was officially approved by Pope Clement XIII. The feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus was inaugurated in 1856, and is now celebrated on the first Friday after the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus’ Sacred Heart is also honored on every first Friday of the month. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.

Santa Margarita María experimentó cuatro revelaciones, durante las cuales Cristo hizo las ahora conocidas Doce Promesas, así como la petición de establecer una fiesta en honor a su Sagrado Corazón. En 1765, setenta y cinco años después de la muerte de Margarita María, la devoción al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús fue aprobada oficialmente por el Papa Clemente XIII. La fiesta del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús se inauguró en 1856 y ahora se celebra el primer viernes después de la Solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo. El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús también se honra cada primer viernes de mes. Santa Margarita María Alacoque fue canonizada por el Papa Benedicto XV en 1920.

Somos un pueblo de Pascua

Acompáñenme a felicitar a todos nuestros graduados de la Parroquia de San José, tanto de preparatoria como de universidad. Es muy importante conmemorar estos hermosos y orgullosos momentos. Que Dios los bendiga abundantemente. Oramos como pueblo de Pascua este fin de semana, sabiendo que Jesús siempre está con nosotros. Ayúdanos, Señor, a escuchar tu voz, a conocer tu voluntad para nuestras vidas y a seguirte hasta la cruz. Jesús, confiamos en ti.            

We have a new Pope and he is from Chicago. This weekend I invite you to pray for our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.  He grew up in Chicago with a desire to be a Math teacher. But while finishing his degree he was called to the Religious life with the Augustinians and to missionary work in Peru.  Much of his religious life and work as a priest and bishop have been with the people in Chiclayo, Peru and giving his heart to them.  He was made a cardinal of the church by Pope Francis and has now been elected the 267th Successor of St. Peter and Vicar of Christ on earth.  With our prayers and gratitude to God, we ask the Lord to bless him, the Holy Spirit to guide him, the prayers of Mary and the Saints to be with him and for our prayers to sustain him on this great pilgrimage of faith.

Jesus, we trust in you.

 Tenemos Papa!

Tenemos un nuevo Papa, originario de Chicago. Este fin de semana los invito a orar por nuestro nuevo Santo Padre, el Papa León XIV. Creció en Chicago con el deseo de ser profesor de matemáticas. Sin embargo, mientras terminaba sus estudios, fue llamado a la vida religiosa con los Agustinos y a la labor misionera en Perú. Gran parte de su vida religiosa y su labor como sacerdote y obispo la han dedicado a la gente de Chiclayo, Perú, entregándoles su corazón. Fue nombrado cardenal por el Papa Francisco y ahora ha sido elegido el 267.º Sucesor de San Pedro y Vicario de Cristo en la tierra. Con nuestras oraciones y gratitud a Dios, pedimos al Señor que lo bendiga, al Espíritu Santo que lo guíe, a la oración de María y de los Santos que lo acompañen y en nuestras oraciones para que lo sostengan en esta gran peregrinación de fe.

Jesús, confiamos en ti.

This weekend we celebrate Mother’s Day and thank our mothers for their love, dedication and faithfulness to God.  We also want to continue to pray to and with Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the Church.  I offer this Mother’s Day Prayer for you all:

Heavenly Father, we lift up to you today all mothers in our life and in the world. Bless them with strength to continue to care for their children, with the same bold, selflessness Mary showed Jesus. Help all mothers feel our gratitude and truly know their impact. May we honor them today, and on all days, as vessels of Your love. In Your name we pray. Amen.

 Este fin de semana celebramos el Día de las Madres y agradecemos a nuestras madres su amor, dedicación y fidelidad a Dios. También queremos seguir orando a María, Madre de Dios y Madre de la Iglesia, y con ella. Ofrezco esta oración del Día de las Madres por todas ustedes:

Padre Celestial, elevamos hoy ante ti a todas las madres de nuestra vida y del mundo. Bendícelas con fuerza para que sigan cuidando de sus hijos con la misma valentía y abnegación que María mostró a Jesús. Ayuda a todas las madres a sentir nuestra gratitud y a comprender verdaderamente su influencia. Que las honremos hoy y siempre, como instrumentos de tu amor. En tu nombre oramos. Amén.

Join me in congratulating and praying for our High School Graduates from St. Joseph Parish.  These young men and women have worked hard to reach this day and we are so proud of your achievements. We pray that you will be blessed. 

Let me also encourage our graduates, and everyone in our parish, to turn to the prayers of Mary this month.  The Month of May is traditionally a time to turn to our Blessed Mother asking for her prayers and reciting the Holy Rosary.  Pray the Rosary!!  Pray the rosary as a family at home.  This a beautiful family devotion that can help sanctify the home and bring prayer in your lives.  Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us!

El Mes de María y Felicidades a los Graduandos

 Únanse a mí para felicitar y orar por nuestros graduados de preparatoria de la Parroquia de San José. Estos jóvenes han trabajado duro para llegar a este día y estamos muy orgullosos de sus logros. Oramos para que sean bendecidos.

Permítanme también animar a nuestros graduados y a todos en nuestra parroquia a recurrir a las oraciones de María este mes. El mes de mayo es tradicionalmente un momento para acudir a nuestra Santísima Madre pidiendo sus oraciones y rezando el Santo Rosario. ¡Recen el Rosario! Recen el Rosario en familia en casa. Esta es una hermosa devoción familiar que puede ayudar a santificar el hogar y traer la oración a sus vidas. ¡Santa María, Madre de Dios, ruega por nosotros!

The octave of Easter ends with this great celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday.  We turn together toward the mercy of Jesus who guides us in prayer, who heals our wounds and forgive our sin.  We need this Mercy in our lives.  We need to trust in Jesus.

I invite all members of the parish to A Holy Hour of Mercy this Sunday at 3pm in the main church.  We will have Eucharistic Adoration, pray the rosary and chaplet of divine mercy and ask the Lord to bless us, to bless our parish and to grant us the grace needed to be free from sin. 

We also congratulate all who will receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist this weekend.  May the grace of the Sacraments help you to stay close to the Heart of Jesus. 

 Domingo de la Divina Misericordia

La octava de Pascua culmina con esta gran celebración del Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. Nos dirigimos juntos a la misericordia de Jesús, quien nos guía en la oración, sana nuestras heridas y perdona nuestros pecados. Necesitamos esta Misericordia en nuestras vidas. Necesitamos confiar en Jesús.

Invito a todos los feligreses a la Hora Santa de la Misericordia este domingo a las 3:00 p.m. en la iglesia principal. Tendremos Adoración Eucarística, rezaremos el rosario y la coronilla de la Divina Misericordia y pediremos al Señor que nos bendiga, que bendiga a nuestra parroquia y que nos conceda la gracia necesaria para estar libres de pecado.

También felicitamos a todos los que recibirán los sacramentos del Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Sagrada Eucaristía este fin de semana. Que la gracia de los sacramentos les ayude a permanecer cerca del Corazón de Jesús.
